EIGHTEEN DAY REDUCING DIET, American

I wanted to share a few days of this "18-Day Reducing Diet" that I found in the back of a cookbook my grandmother had. It was published in 1950 and is called "Kalispell's Favorite Recipes, Compiled By The Christian Women's Fellowship, Kalispell, Montana".

A page before the diet notes "All material in this section was submitted by Dr. James D. Orr, Dietitian and Physio-Therapist of the Gateway Health Institute, Kansas City, Missouri. Before using any diet we recommend that you consult your physician."

Notes For Serving

  • BREAKFAST: In this diet the same breakfast is used every day and consists of 1/2 grapefruit, Melba toast, and coffee.

  • FIRST DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 egg, 6 slices cucumber, 1 slice Melba toast, tea or coffee
  • DINNER: 2 eggs, 1 tomato, 1/2 head lettuce, 1/2 grapefruit, coffee
  • SECOND DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1 orange, 1 egg, 1 slice Melba toast, 1/2 head lettuce, tea
  • DINNER: 1 small broiled steak, plain; 1/2 head lettuce, 1 tomato, 1 grapefruit, tea or coffee
  • THIRD DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 egg, 8 slices cucumber, tea or coffee
  • DINNER: 1 lamb chop lean, plain; 1 egg, 3 radishes, 1/2 grapefruit, tea or coffee
  • FOURTH DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1 tomato, 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice Melba toast, cottage cheese, tea
  • DINNER: 1/2 grapefruit, watercress, 1 small broiled steak, plain; coffee
  • FIFTH DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1 orange, 1 lamb chop lean, plain; 1/2 head lettuce, tea
  • DINNER: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 tomato, 2 eggs, 1/2 head lettuce, tea
  • SIXTH DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1 egg, 1 orange, tea
  • DINNER: 1 poached egg, 1 slice Melba toast, 1 orange, tea
  • SEVENTH DAY:
  • LUNCH: 1/2 grapefruit, 1 egg, 1/2 head lettuce, 1 tomato, 2 olives
  • DINNER: 1 lamb chop, 6 slices cucumber, 2 olives, 1 tomato, tea or coffee
