SURVEY OF THE DECADES - CHILDREN & FAMILYThis was also the 50s!"HARTFORD April 4 1951 (AP) Members of the General
Assembly's Labor committee were invited today to inspect Connecticut
tobacco farms and decide for themselves whether children employees were
working under satisfactory conditions. The invitation came from Ralph C.
Lasbury, Jr., a spokesman for the Connecticut Shade Tobacco Grower
Agricultural association. He challenged testimony that minors were not
properly housed, that they were exposed to sex offenses and that their
transportation to and from the farms should be more strictly
supervised." Excerpt from an article titled "Change Opposed On Law
Governing Minors On Farms" from
The Bridgeport Telegram, Thursday,
April 5, 1951.
