Keep Your Home and Garden Free of Ants

Corn meal. Anywhere you see ants put a tablespoon of cornmeal. Ants can't digest cornmeal so it is the end of the line for any ant dining on cornmeal. Don't expect overnight success, cornmeal is not a can of raid. Maybe that's why they ate so much cornmeal in the pioneer days, no ants.

RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE

BAKED GOODS

BASIC YEAST DOUGH WITH VARIATIONS, Romanian

Ingredients
  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • Grated lemon peel
  • 1 cake yeast dissolved in 2 tbsp. warm water
  • 2 egg yolks and 2 whole eggs
  • 2/3 cup scalded milk (cooled to lukewarm)
Preparation Instructions

Sift flour and sugar in large bowl, add salt, lemon peel, milk, yeast, butter and eggs in that order and mix as ingredients are added. Knead about 15 or 20 minutes. Let rise in warm place.

Then proceed with directions for nut or poppy seed roll, raised doughnuts, cheese or plum cake.

When doubled in bulk, divide in two and roll out not more than 1/2 inch thick. Fill with nut or poppy seed filling, roll up and place in loaf pans (grassed well). Brush with melted butter or beaten egg white, cover, place in warm place to rise again. When doubled in bulk, brush again and bake about 45 minutes at 350°.
