RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE

SIDE DISH

CZECH DUMPLINGS, Czechoslovakian

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. flour
  • Salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • 7 ozs. white bread
Preparation Instructions

Sift flour, add salt and mix. Add cold water and milk in which the egg yolks were beaten. Mix all the ingredients well. The dough should not be too tough. Fry cubes of sliced white bread in melted butter. When cool, mix the cubes with the dough. Cover a bread board with flour, put the dough on it and form three loaves. Cook in salted water for 25 to 30 minutes. While cooking, lift them with stirrer, so that they do not stick to the bottom of the pot, and turn them over. Slice cooked dumplings with a sharp knife into slices about ½ inch thick and pour melted butter over them. Serves 5.
