Can You Help?

I recently stayed in a top floor apartment in Prague and every night about dinner time my balcony was enveloped with the most delicious aroma- an aroma I had never smelled before. One night for dinner I order turkey cutlet with a pepper sauce and this creamy white sauce had the same aroma. It was delicious!!! Unfortunately, the waiter didn't know what I was asking and couldn't identify the aroma for me.

Do you have any idea what this spice/herb could be that must be a common Czech ingredient? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Facts About Czechoslovakia

I have been there too - and it is no longer called Czechoslovakia! It is now two countries: The Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Interesting little tidbit about my trip to Czechoslovakia - as it was still known back then. I managed to show up there during a Very Historic Event (VHE), completely unbeknownst to me. It was the day that Vaclav Havel was being sworn in as the new president of the country.  Exciting isn't it? Czechoslovakia was to have its first elected leader since the Soviets took over in ??? and there I was, right smack in the middle of it in Prague or Praha as all the signs say.
The only problem with this was that this was a very spontaneous trip, and we had no hotel accommodations. To make matters worse, it was the middle of winter, and as usual, I was coming down with a bad cold. As is the case when VHEs occur, every reporter from Novosibirsk to Punta Arenas was in town to memorialize said VHE. Meaning every hotel room in Praha was occupado. My friend decided that we should sleep in the car (all 4 of us, in a VW Passat, no blankets, freezing temperatures...), at which point my survival instinct kicked in and I hopped out of the car and flagged down the next Taxi I saw. I somehow explained our situation, (while handing the cab driver all of the funny money we had been forced to exchange at the border), and soon we were off to a clean, comfortable hotel with crisp white sheets on the bed. (I remember the sheets the most as between them is where I, and my now very, very bad cold stayed for the next two days.) The cab driver also exchanged our money for us; at a rate of 13 : 1 instead of the 1 : 1 we had received on the border.
Moral of the Story: If you ever are in a pinch anywhere in the world, ask a cabbie. Whatever is going on in whatever place you presently find yourself, the cabbies know about it, and know how to get just about anything. The trick is to just get them to tell you (the truth).
