Keep Your Home and Garden Free of Ants

Corn meal. Anywhere you see ants put a tablespoon of cornmeal. Ants can't digest cornmeal so it is the end of the line for any ant dining on cornmeal. Don't expect overnight success, cornmeal is not a can of raid. Maybe that's why they ate so much cornmeal in the pioneer days, no ants.

RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE

SIDE DISH

DOMATESLI PILAV (Pilaf with Tomatoes), Turkish

Ingredients
  • 2 cups rice
  • 3 1/2 cups liquid (water, meat or chicken broth)
  • 3 medium tomatoes
  • 4 tbsp. butter
  • 2 tsp. salt
Preparation Instructions

Wash rice three times and then pour boiling water over it and let stand until cool.

Peel tomatoes and remove excess seed. Cut into small chunks. Heat butter and tomatoes together until a tomato paste texture is obtained. Add liquid and bring to a boil. Allow to boil 1 minute, Drain rice and add to mixture. Cover and cook without stirring over medium flame until rice soaks up the liquid. Turn flame very low and cook rice 30 minutes more. Serve.
