Dear Retro Housewife,

Can you help. I clean every day; Hoover, polish, clean, clean, clean, but when the sun shines in I can see dust everywhere and hairs. I have 2 cats, I know, but surely it shouldn't be that bad. I have a Dyson cleaner, and brush the cats out every day, in the sunbeam there are thousands of particles. What ever can I do?

Dear Lesley,

Are these dust particles causing you any problems, such as allergies? Or does it just bug you that they are there? While I doubt you can entirely rid your house of dust, (everybody will see dust particles in the sunlight if they look) there are a few things I would try.

1. Have you changed the filter on your Dyson? My Dyson vac shipped with a spare filter so that you don't have to go without vacuuming while your filter is "in the wash".  Cleaning them is quite simple, all you do is remove the spongy filter and run it under warm water until the water runs clear. (see your user manual for complete instructions). Then you let it dry thoroughly and it is ready to go when you need to clean your second filter.
2. Shampoo your carpets - I just bought a new Bissell Turbo and it is awesome!
3. Get an air filter or 6, depending how just how big of a problem you have.
4. If you think you have an excessive problem, try to track down the source, and then eliminate the source or find a way to fix the dust making.
