DEAR RETRO HOUSEWIFE

Hair Spray, 2007-06-07

Dear Retro Housewife,

A retro housewife would likely have worn a hairstyle popular in the 50's which consisted of high mounds of hair shaped on the top of one's head and hair. What would the hair spray be called?

RE: Hair Spray
    Dear Visitor,

Do you mean what type of hair spray was used for this style? Or perhaps what brand of hair spray? There are two possibilities I can think of that describe what you are looking for. One possibility is the cold wave, although the hair was not piled high, but was permed into place and the curls sat rather snugly on the head. The other possibility is the bouffant hair-do. There was also a perm for this, or women back combed their hair to get the puffiness and then sprayed it with hairspray. Once the hair was "done", the style was expected to hold for a week or so, and many women made weekly trips to the hairdresser.
