RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE
SIDE DISHKAALIKAEAERYLEET (Cabbage Rolls), FinnishIngredients
Preparation InstructionsCook cabbage so that leaves can be separated and folded without breaking; remove thick vein. Cook rice until soft; mix with ground beef, salt, bread crumbs, egg and milk. Mix well. Place about 2 tbsp. of the mixture on each cabbage leaf, fold and roil leaf. Fry cabbage roll in butter until brown. Place in layers in casserole; sprinkle each layer with sugar and salt; add meat stock. Cover and bake in a slow oven 3 to 4 hours. Cabbage rolls taste better when re-heated the following day. Serve with lingonberry preserves. A sauce can be made from the stock by adding cream, if desired.
