Whether you are entertaining a starry eyed twosome or a family gathering, St. Valentine's Day is a propitious occasion for creating sweets with imagination. Consider romantic tradition when you plan your party centerpiece. A festive choice is a heart-shaped Strawberry Dream Cake, circled with Kewpies, a fourth generation of the lovable sprites, who double as good luck Valentine party favors.

For surprise flavor, beat a half package of quick frozen strawberries, thawed, into the cake batter and beat the remainder into the creamy frosting. This embellishment is a feature of the Valentine recipe of the International Rose O'Neill Club, based in Branson, Mo. in the Ozarks. There the late artist. Rose O'Neill, created her Kewpies, keyed to projecting love and good will around the world.

Strawberry cakes were traditional summer festival favorites in the Ozarks, according to Jean Cantwell. International Rose O'Neill Club president, who updated the Kewpie Strawberry Dream Cake recipe for the Club's '75 Valentine celebration by using cake mix and quick frozen strawberries. If you don't have a heart-shaped pan for the Valentine Cake, you can achieve a similarly romantic effect by using halved strawberries or candies to achieve a heart shape or intertwined hearts on the frosting.

  • 1 Package white cake mix
  • 1 package (3 oz.) strawberry flavor gelatin
  • 1 package (10 oz.) frozen sliced strawberries, thawed, divided
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
Preparation Instructions

Empty cake mix into the largest bowl of electric mixer. Add strawberry gelatin. Puree 1/2 package of sliced strawberries in blender (or put through a sieve) and pour into measuring cup; add enough water to make 3/4 cup. Add with vegetable oil and eggs to the mixture. Blend at low speed just enough to moisten. Beat 3 minutes at medium speed of mixer, or with spoon, until creamy.

Pour batter into greased and floured heart-shaped cake pan or into a 9-inch tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 to 65 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Loosen cake from sides of pan. Turn out and finish cooling on cake rack. Frost top and sides with: KEWPIE STRAWBERRY FROSTING
