Life in the 1990s

Some fear line will mean conflict.

Using brittle archival documents and state-of-the-art mapping photography U.N. map experts have surveyed the original 1932 border drawn by British colonial officials and are now marking it on the ground. It is the first time since Kuwait and Iraq became independent that their 124-mile mostly desert border will be clearly and physically defined.

The problem with this new border survey is that Iraqis of nearly every political persuasion appear to reject it.

Violence rocks Los Angeles after acquittal in taped-beating trial

LOS ANGELES (AP) Blacks and whites attacked police headquarters and fires, looting and gun battles broke out overnight after four white policemen were acquitted in the videotaped beating of a black motorist. At least nine people were killed and 138 hurt. Gov. Pete Wilson declared a state of emergency and 2,000 National Guardsmen were sent to armories and other gathering points to await orders as the city tried to quell the worst outbreak of violence since the Watts riots of 1965. ... The blast occurred at the start of a work day, as parents dropped off their youngsters at the day-care center in the federal building. Before the smoke cleared, emergency worker Heather Taylor had put tags on the toes of at least 12 children.

In a Flash, Parents Lost Their Babies.Assistant Fire Chief Jon Hansen described the first 30 minutes after the bombing as "pure mayhem." Streets were choked with walking wounded, emergency crews and well-meaning citizens.

Some people apparently, driving near the federal building at the time of 'the blast appeared to have been killed in their cars.

Inside the federal building, survivors were screaming and crying, Hansen said.. "We're having, to crawl over victims to-try and reach the living, and often all we can do is hold their hand." Ten to 20 children were unaccounted for late in the day. Taylor knew of only two who survived. One was in surgery, the other in intensive care.

"The day care center is totally gone said Dr. Carl Spongier, who helped Taylor with the victims. It was on the, second floor of the nine story Alfred P. Murrah Building, just above the spot where the car bomb exploded.
