RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE
MAIN COURSENUT CRUST HAM SLICE, AmericanMake Most-of The Low-Point War Recipes"Better meals in wartime" is the name of a new book by Lola Wyman. It's nice and down-to-earthy and rates our hungry reading. It contains many no-point, low-point menus and recipes. Ingredients
Preparation InstructionsPlace the ham, large enough to serve 4, in a well-greased flat baking dish, spread the top of the slice with peanut butter, being sure it reaches all edges of the slice. On top of the peanut butter press in about ½ cup of brown sugar. On top of the sugar, strew about 1 cup of soft white bread crumbs. Sprinkle the the melted margarine on top of the crumbs. Pour the cup of milk over the whole. Bake about 45 minutes to 1 hour in a moderate oven (350 degrees F.). When done, it has a crusty top, golden brown. The peanut butter gives a delicious flavor and the milk gravy tastes splendid on mashed potatoes. (Serves 4) Contributed by Lola Wyman, 1944HAVE A COMMENT, QUESTION OR RECIPE OF YOUR OWN? I would like to thank Newspaperarchive for putting together such a fabulous service, and placing our Nation's history right at our fingertips. Many of these wonderful recipes are ones I stumbled upon quite by accident while sleuthing through the decades in my quest to assemble the world of the American housewife. RH |
