What Kind Of Pet Insurance is Available?

In general, pet insurance works the same as people insurance. The more coverage you buy, the more expensive your insurance premiums will be. You can lower the cost of the insurance by choosing a higher deductible, or limiting the insurance coverage to specific conditions.

Accident Coverage:
  • Accident insurance for dogs covers only accidents (and only certain types of accidents), but no illness.
Accident & Illness Coverage:
  • This type of pet health insurance covers both accidents and illnesses (check whether cancer is included). We have had occasion to need both, so I would recommend going for the dual coverage.
Accident & Illness Coverage for Senior Dogs:
  • Insuring an older pet is much more expensive than a young one. Only select illnesses are covered.

Why Pet Insurance?

Pet insurance, specifically doggie health insurance (I am a dog person) can help you avoid the painful decision of choosing between money and the life of your dog. Even minor operations for dogs can cost a fortune, and you can quickly find yourself faced with a bill of several thousand dollars.

On one of our visits to the emergency veterinary clinic, I had the chance to observe several dogs arrive in fairly serious condition, and then watch the owners wrangle with the whether they could afford the impending bill.

In the handful of cases I saw, all of the owners found the money and their pet was treated. In one case, a brother and sister sat in the waiting room on their cell phone and scrounged up the money, borrowing from friends and family members. Their pet's treatment cost more than the premiums for great coverage for about 2 years.
