Where we live, Thursday is trash day, so Wednesday is spent announcing that fact in the hope that the rest of my family will break with tradition, and take out the trash. Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I end up emptying all the trash myself, and sometimes I go flying through the house screaming "Trash Day" because I have forgotten it is really Thursday, and have just heard the approaching rumble and hydraulics of the trash truck.

I find if you create enough panic everybody will jump up, grab a trash can and race towards the garage door before they have a chance to consider that the worst thing that could happen is that we have a fuller trash can for another week...

For this method to be truly effective though, you have to yell "Trash Day" much in the same way you would yell "Fire" if you had just discovered that the entire second storey was engulfed in flames. You must also run around grabbing trash cans as if your life depended on it, otherwise they will catch on and just sort of shuffle towards the door.

But I digress, that is really about Thursdays now, isn't it?

WHAT DO YOU DO ON WEDNESDAYS? Tell us at the retro housewife hotline! - P.S. If you have a topically related Blog, site or MySpace etc. page, I will be happy to link to it from your tip...although I retain the right not to disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer, legal stuff that keeps me out of trouble. Basically, I don't want any of the bad stuff we all try to avoid on the net.

Get Organized! Wednesday Washday

Do one thing each week that will improve the organization of your household. You can do one thing, can't you?

Here are some organizing ideas to choose from on Wednesdays!
  1. Level 1 Beginner - Buy some laundry baskets + hampers.
Does each person in your household have a hamper or laundry basket in their room? They should! That will give them a place other than the floor to toss their dirty clothes. Lots of Hampers!
  2. Level 2 Intermediate - Organize your laundry room. I have a front-open plastic box where I keep all of my detergents, and softeners and other cleaning items. That limits the spillage goo to the box, and I can lift it up easily to clean underneath.

Rag System:  Both my washer and dryer have utility drawers underneath, so I keep clean rags in the drawer underneath the dryer, and dirty ones underneath the washer. You can accomplish the same with small laundry baskets or plastic boxes if your washer/dryer are not so equipped!

Laundry System: I needed a place to hang clothes as soon as they came out of the dryer so that they wouldn't wrinkle. Running them to the appropriate closet just wasn't practical. I also wanted a main laundry system where I could separate colors etc. to simplify the sorting procedure. I found my solution in the Simply Storage Triple Deluxe Laundry Center, currently $49.99 at I love it!
