ROAMING RETRO DIGI-PAC:
Your digital survival guide!
- Notebook w/ wireless card and ethernet adapter
- extra long network cable
- extra long phone cable....just in case.
- mini-hub or mini-switch
- travel mouse
- subscription to a wireless internet service such as Boingo or
T-mobile.
- subscription and client software for your favorite free dial-up
access provider should you get really desperate.
International Travel
- If your destination used a different voltage for electricity,
and the adapter on your notebook power cable can support it, all you
need to do is to get the lower half of the power cord for your
destination country. It's usually easiest to do this when you are
there.
Cell Phone Usage Abroad
- I don't know about the rest of the world, but if you are
traveling to Europe, forget your US cell phone, (or turn it off and
stick it in a safe place at the bottom of your suitcase) and when
you get to Europe, get yourself one of those pre-paid cell phones,
including local cell phone number. You usually get the phone for
free, and you can buy minutes everywhere, as well as reload minutes
over the internet. It is cheaper for all parties involved, and you
actually have a useful phone over your trip. Also, there will not be
any big surprises on your next bill, because if you yack more than
you paid for, your phone will just cut you off.
I got an 02 phone plan when I was in Germany last. Worked
out swell.
