RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE

MAIN COURSE

ROULADEN (German Rolled Round Steak), German

Rouladen or German Rolled Round Steak
Rouladen are round steak wrapped around bacon and pickles. Rouladen are delicious but can take some time to prepare!

Ingredients
  • 4 slices or round, steak (thin)
  • Shortening (or butter)
  • 2 large dill pickles
  • 2 medium onions
  • 4 strips bacon
  • Some hot mustard
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper
Preparation Instructions

Pound or tenderize the steak. Spread hot mustard on each piece. Slice dill pickle and onions very thin. Slice bacon in small pieces. Place the pickle, onion and bacon on the steak in a scattered fashion. Season with salt and pepper. Fold sides of steak about 1/2 inch on either side, roll like a jelly-roll and tie the rolls with string so the filling does not fall out. Put a little shortening in a frying pan and fry rolls until brown. Add water to half cover the steak and simmer 45 minutes in a covered pan. Make brown gravy with the liquid and serve on the steak. Serves 4.
