Facts About RussiaRussia is almost twice as large as the United States, but much of the land is not fit for agriculture. The arable land in Russia produces food stuffs such as grain, sugar beets, sunflower seed, vegetables (cabbage and potatoes), fruits, beef and milk.Russian culture has a long history and tradition and Russians are very proud of it. They are famous for their ballet (Bolshoi Ballet), composers (Tchaikovsky, who wrote the Nutcracker Suite) and writers (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy). Russia is also famous for being our grand enemy for 50 or so years during the period of the communist Soviet Union. Prior to that, the Czar and Czarina, Nicholas II and Alexandra ran the place, with some help from the Siberian Eastern Orthodox mystic Rasputin. This unhappy crew was executed when the Bolsheviks (Commies) took over. It's not easy being Russian. If you are interested in grand old Russian culture (from the period when Russia had an upper class), read Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. I just love the descriptions of the Russian tea houses! |
