RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE
SARMALUTZE (Stuffed Vegetable Leaves), Romanian
This recipe is a variation of: SARMALUTZE DIN FRUNZE DE VITZA
Instead of grape leaves or cabbage leaves, there are other firm vegetable leaves just as good, such as large fresh and firm beet leaves, kohlrabi leaves, chard, etc. Be careful when wilting as some are very tender. Use filling and sauce as for grape leaves (SARMALUTZE DIN FRUNZE DE VITZA). Same filling and sauce for stuffed kohlrabi, turnips, squash, etc. Eggplants and tomatoes may be filled and cooked as above also.Goes with: SARMALUTZE DIN FRUNZE DE VITZA - Main Recipe.

I would like to thank Newspaperarchive for putting together such a fabulous service, and placing our Nation's history right at our fingertips. Many of these wonderful recipes are ones I stumbled upon quite by accident while sleuthing through the decades in my quest to assemble the world of the American housewife. RH
