RECIPES FROM THE RETRO HOUSEWIFE

SIDE DISH

STEWED CABBAGE, Czechoslovakian

Ingredients
  • 1 head of cabbage (12 ozs.)
  • 2 ozs. fat
  • 1 ½ ozs. onions
  • Caraway seeds
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp. flour
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 or 3 tbsp. vinegar
Preparation Instructions

Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage, cut it in quarters, cut out the stump and slice into small noodle-sized strips. Pour boiling water over the sliced cabbage and strain it. Finally, cut onions and fry in fat, add cabbage, caraway seeds, salt and steam until soft. Put flour into cabbage and steam again for a while, then sweeten the cabbage with sugar, add vinegar and serve.
